Transitions Lifestyle Weight management System

Introduction:

Approximately 60% (133 million) Americans are over weight and these statistics continue to climb. The prevalence of obesity has grown from 44.8% to 66% from 1960. A recent study found that obesity can cut life expectancy by as much as 13 years, becoming a greater threat than smoking, which reduces an average life span by 10 years. Obesity increases the risk for chronic ailments such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, some forms of cancer and joint disorders such as osteoarthritis, knee pain, hip/back pain, ankle/foot pain and gout. Not only are we eating poorly but we are also not exercising. Approximately 59% of adults do not engage in any vigorous physical activity or exercise.

The research on childhood obesity is equally as sobering. According to the America Academy of Pediatrics, the number of overweight and obese children has doubled in the past 2 decades to more than 9 million. Currently, 15.3% of 6-11-year-olds and 15.5% of 12-19-year-olds are obese.

We see the reality of those statistics in our patients every day. At Mishock Physical Therapy we are dedicated to combating this epidemic of obesity by utilizing our expertise in nutrition and exercise. There are a number of research studies comparing the various diets that we typically use as American's. Many of these diet programs do not work long term. A recent study compared various weight loss programs (Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, LA weight loss, Zone Diet and South Beach) and found that at the end of one year there was only a 10 pound average weight loss with 45% dropping out of the diet program.

However, there is a better way. The program is called Transitions Lifestyle Weight Management System. The program is based on the latest research and science on how bodies function and what we need to do to lose weight. In a study performed using the Transitions weight loss system participants lost 4 inches, 4% body fat and 12 lbs in just 12 weeks. Furthermore, individuals continued to lose weight and had less drop outs.

The keys to the program are education on low glycemic eating, exercise, nutritional supplementation (if needed), stress reduction/relaxation exercises, menu planning and daily journaling to empower participants to achieve their weight loss goals.

Design:

The program will be conducted for 12 weeks (12 sessions). Each participant will attend a weekly educational meeting. During each meeting various topics will be discussed such as understanding low glycemic eating, the benefits of exercise, the benefits of stress reduction, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

During session one the participants will be given a daily journal and the components of the Transitions Lifestyle System will be explained including; low glycemic index food choices, meal planning, nutritional supplementation needs, exercise choices and how to fill out your daily journal to keep track of your food. The participants will be weighted and percent body fat measured. Furthermore we will use a tape measure to measure the waist, hips, arms, thighs and neck. Measurements will be repeated at 4, 8 and 12 weeks.

The exercise component can be done at home, at your own gym, or at our Gilbertsville facility guided by our expert staff. Option 1, if an individual is already exercising they can continue to do so on their own. Option 2, participants can be evaluated and a specific exercise program designed to be performed at home or your gym. Option 3, participants are evaluated and a specific exercise program is designed and performed in a self directed manner at our Gilbertsville facility. Option 4, participants are evaluated and a specific exercise program designed to be performed at to our Gilbertsville facility meeting 2-3x's per week under the direct supervision of our licensed athletic trainer/physical therapist.
